The Big Mountain Road project consisted of the realignment and reconstruction of 3.977 kilometers of Secondary Route 487 north of Whitefish in Flathead County. M.A. DeAtley’s work included 250,000 cubic meters of excavation, placement of special borrow and base course, installation of sanitary sewer and storm sewer. This project proved to be very challenging and unique as it was located on the mountain side with an elevation change of 317 meters. With limited right-of-way and large cuts and fills this project required the construction of four MSE retaining walls, a total of 5,716 square meters of wall face.
